Chapter Nineteen

I kneel carefully beside Mom again as Athella, Malia, and Dastian raise their heads and open their eyes, all tension gone.

On my right-hand side, Taniya also lifts her head, a soft smile on her lips, a rare expression of peace on her face.

I’m suddenly not sure if any of them were aware of the impact that the magic had on me or the fact that I had to retreat from it—and I’m not about to enlighten them.

Athella’s sky-blue gaze bores into me. “The wards have been set,” she says. “Nobody will be able to trace the demonic taint to our pack. She’s safe here.”

“Thank you,” I whisper.

Athella’s focus is unwavering as she continues. “I have also been able to halt the nightmares she was having, but the nightmare power will not completely release her until you can banish the demon who controls it back to the Underworld. Until then, she won’t wake up.”

My heart sinks because Mom still isn’t safe. “How can we banish him?”

I’d asked Roman how we could force Rune back to the Underworld and he’d refused to answer, telling me to choose another question. He can’t control Athella though, and if she knows… I need the answer.

She presses her lips together and exchanges a look with Dastian before she clears her throat. “It’s dangerous.”

I give a short exhale. Roman withheld this information for the same reason. “What isn’t?”

Athella sighs. “When the runes first appeared across Vegas, Dastian asked me the same question: How can we banish the Master back to the Underworld? I wouldn’t tell him because I knew he’d go out there on his own regardless of the danger to himself. But now…” Her mesmerizing gaze passes across me, my sisters, and even Roman before pausing on Dastian. “Now, there is strength in numbers. So I’m willing to tell you, even though I worry for your safety and the sacrifices you might need to make.”

“No,” Roman says suddenly, his voice a snap in the still night air.

Dastian doesn’t appear to like that, jumping up and in front of Athella, his face set in hard lines. “You do not lead here, wolf,” he snarls at Roman. “Athella sees more than you can imagine, and we will respect her choices.”

It’s Roman’s turn to snarl, but as his gaze flits from Dastian to me—and the no doubt near desperate look I’m wearing—I see a slight softening of his features. “Don't say I didn’t warn you.”

I nod, but there’s nothing stopping me now. “We need to know.”

Roman shakes his head but doesn't argue again. Athella gently nudges Dastian aside, allowing us to see her fully again. “There is a weapon that was created by the angels in ancient times and once used against the Master of Demon Runes, but it’s incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. So dangerous that the iron wolves dismantled it and hid the pieces where they would not be found—and could not be misused.”

“Where did they hide them?” I ask, my question short as I force myself not to look at the only remaining iron wolf in the world.
